INTRODUCTION

2 v 1 is a fundamental skill of Rugby League and it introduces the overlap which is something we are always trying to create as it represents a try scoring opportunity. You will find a number of ways to complete this drill and all are equally as successful.

INSTRUCTIONS

Set out 2 channels as per the animation with 2 defenders on each side (Red), the first defender should be around 10 meters away from the attackers with the second around 10 meters behind him. Same goes for the defenders in the second channel. These defenders to start with are only allowed to move side to side.

The whole point of this exercise is for the ball carrier to drag the defender away from the support player before making the pass. Starting player runs on an arc, in towards the defender and then back out to where he started, the defender should slide across to make the tackle. At the point where the ball carrier thinks he has taken the defender far enough away that he wouldn't be able to cover and get back across to the support player he releases the ball.

The support player then becomes the carrier, draws the next man and passes. They then run around into the second channel and continue in the same manner. The good thing about this particular 2v1 drill is that you can have 4 pairs constantly rotating through the drill.

ADVANCING THE DRILL

The advances in this drill are making the defenders work and therefore forcing the attackers to think, play what is in front of them and react quicker. As you advance the drill initially more mistakes will be made as is to be expected.

  • Allow the defender to move off his line and attack the ball carrier

  • Put another cone behind each defender around 5 meters back, as the attackers move the defender then has to retreat back to his line before he can defend.

  • Can you come up with anything else to advance the drill? Let us know on the forum.
